Filingpoint The Director Identification Number is an 8-digit unique identity number issued by the Central Government to individuals who intend to or have been appointed as Directors in a company. It is registered in a centralized database and is used for verifying the information of a person with the Registrar of Companies (ROC). A DIN cannot be transferred. It is mandatory for every individual who wants to be a director in a company to get his/her DIN.
If a DIN goes unused for more than 12 months, the Department will automatically deactivate it. However, the DIN holder can still surrender his/her DIN by filing an application in form DIR-5 along with a declaration that they have not been appointed as a Director and that their DIN has never been used for filing any documents with any authority.
Annual KYC reporting is mandatory for all individuals holding a DIN. This reporting can be done through web-form DIR-3 KYC. If an individual fails to report their KYC by the due date, their DIN status will be marked as "Deactivated Due to Non-filing of DIR-3 KYC".
The ministry has set up measures during the DIN registration process that eliminate duplicate DINs by cross-checking them against the PAN database. Nevertheless, in some cases, duplicate DINs are created unintentionally. This is why the Government introduced Form DIR-5 to allow individuals who hold multiple DINs to surrender their duplicate DINs. Individuals who wish to surrender their DIN must submit this form online to the MCA website.
